  • Oh, you have to hit the keys on the board to post an entry!

    We did it.
    We sold out.
The kids didn't ask us to.

    Dark is his heart.
    Evil are his anthropomorphic ways.
His mark lay everywhere upon the land.
We were encapsulated in his world for a full week, but escaped to tell the tale.

    Our Trip To DisneyWorld!
Okay, I was going to make this an longer post with lots of pictures, but the editor is being a pain in the rump, and  I want to head to bed.  So, I might finish this tomorrow.  I might not.  I might have to break out the internet explorer and see if the editor works better that way.  Maybe I'll send the blog in via email and then edit the photos in from Flickr later.  Maybe I'll forget and not post again for a few months.  Hell, it's up to me.  I could just upload an old video from Japan and leave it there couldn't I!
Or Xanga could be a real bitch and not let me upload the video either.

    grumble...

  • Soon is a relative term

So, last year, sometime in the spring we were invited to go to a local Ren-Fair(I donta feela lika spellina Renaissance) with a couple of friends.  They liked to work on semi-authentic Renaissance costumes and wear them, so my wife decided we would go and she would do the same. The only unfortunate side to this is she only had time to make a costume for herself and our daughters.  Sadly, I was but a modern lad lost in time.  This allowed me to carry the camera for most of the day and not be an anachronism.

The wyf and children in their costumes.  I thought Carrie's outfit looked a bit German barmaidish so I had her pose with the mug.

There were various entertainments to be had.  We watched the falconer show below.  I got a lot of bird pictures.  As usual I linked these in from my Flickr site so if I edited my html right if you click on the pic it should take you to the full size photo on that page.
So who can name all the birds in the above pics?
There was also a living statue.  Don't worry, we tipped her so I was ok to take the picture.
Then you had these guys.  The funnier of the skit groups.  You could tell they actually practiced to, if not a script, at least something that was written down and not total improv.  The other group was a little rough around the edges, but these guys played the crowd very well.   I think they were called the Rogue Sword Show.   The Ren fair in our area is relatively new, so I don't know how good of acts we can really draw.  I've been to the permanent one out near Dayton Ohio, and one in Arizona, and you can definitely see a difference in the quality of some of the acts.  But these guys were good.
The last thing we did before leaving was watch one of the Jousts.  These guys put on a good show.  Full armor jousting.  The sequence below shows when one of the riders was unhorsed.  Now, when this happened they claimed that it is very rare in modern jousting for someone to be unhorsed, but my brother went to the fair the next day and said the same guy was unhorsed and the same announcement was made, so I don't know how "rehearsed" some of this show was.  Either way, I don't want to be that guy.  You can see bits of the lance flying through the air as he is hit.  The second two pics are in sequence of the unhorsing.  The first pic was taken on a different pass.

These are our friends that invited us to come with them.  Next year I get a cool outfit like his.  Or maybe I'll just go as a madman in a loincloth.
Well that was the fair.  You can see it set up in the background of the pic above.  If I get a good enough costume this year, maybe I can convince the wyf to go to the one in Ohio.

Next up, Business trip to Vegas!

  • I just noticed that the profile type thing on the left there says I've had a member since 12/8/2002.  I just want to clarify that I've had one since I was born.

All photos to the renfair now linked.  Soon words to be added, much silliness to ensue.

  •      Now that it is the beginning of September(still pretending).  I thought we should take a walk to the local ice cream stop!
As we leave the house and walk down the the street we see some lovely sidewalk sculpture.  Oooh deliciously mysterious, and though my wife disagrees, highly suggestive -wink- -wink-.
The buildings in our town are pretty old.  This place has been here awhile and was settled due to a natural gas boom.  There was a nice glass factory in town that went bust, an old empty lot where the wood mill burnt down quite a few years ago, and that pretty much describes the economic status of where I live.  But during WWII it was declared Small Town USA by some pamphlet that was written because it exemplified a small town in the USA.  It's still pretty much the same.  But the reason I bring this up is that some of the buildings still have the old mural advertisements on the sides.  So after we pass the obscene concrete sculpture we pass the local VFW hall. Of course some idiot covered the M in Miller with aluminum siding.   So now it is Iller beer.  That's how I think of it anyway.
Now that we've had our alcohol fix it's time for something softer a few buildings down the road.
I have no idea where Gallery 1 is.
And at this point we turn the corner and head around downtown.  And as we go on down the street we get to the building that is the entire reason for this entry.  I've seen the sign on this building for the last 3 years that we have lived in this town, and ever since we got a digital camera, I've wanted to get a picture and post it on here.  I've finally accomplished this, so now my life seems a little empty. They spelled the name wrong, but I thought he used to run a gaming store in Wyoming.
After I took this picture I thought about going around town and finding places that have the names of various folks I read, but then it started to feel like a bit more work than necessary, hell, I hadn't even posted since our summer vacation in June.(see still pretending it's September)  And also the only other place I could think of was Rachel's Highway Cafe.
After passing up Fleenor's place we find the local supermarket.  Cox's.  Yes, you heard me right.

Of course now that Xanga has shrunk and mangled the picture you can't really read the sign.  They also run a gift shop across the street.  Now I have a good friend that lives in Louisville and he showed me the tobacco stores down there owned by another grocery store called Cox's and they are called Cox's Smokers.  That beats this one by a mile for sheer audacity.
Moving on along we pass by this innocuous apartment building.

Nothing really special about it by looking at it.  According to my father this is where Ray Charles was arrested in Indiana.  Now, I just tried to research this, but I got as far as 'a hotel room in Indiana' for detail.  One of them said Indianapolis, but I don't really doubt my father's word on this one.  He used to work for his father at a garage down the street, and later tended bar at a tavern nearby.  If I'm doing my math right it would have been around that time.  Now, we aren't going to see it because it isn't on the way to the ice cream place, but Elvis used to go fising in a pond on the south side of town with the Gaithers(a gospel group/family).  So that makes two musical drug addicts that hung out in our town!
Let's get moving, the sun is going down.  We finally arrive at our destination.  A summer favorite since 1952.  Dor-tee's drive in!
I don't know how many owners this place has been through, but it has a new one this year.  We'll see if he lasts.  MMM relatively cheap soft serve ice cream served by inept high school girls, my favorite.

While here I notice the sign advertising one of their new food specials.
Don't ask, I don't know, nor do I want to.

So now we need to head home before it gets dark.  We'll pass by the local movie theater, one screen with a stage, 7pm shows on Friday, Saturday, and 2 shows on Sunday.  I didn't get a picture.
We head up the main drag of town towards that skyline of downtown, taking the long way home so we can see the glory that is Small Town USA.

Lurkage is about all I have been able to handle, this year. I don't even know if I'll be able to keep up my end of the one-blog-a-day challenge, but I felt like it might be good to get a few of the words out...they do build up, y'know?
