Now that it is the beginning of September(still pretending). I thought we should take a walk to the local ice cream stop!
As we leave the house and walk down the the street we see some lovely sidewalk sculpture. Oooh deliciously mysterious, and though my wife disagrees, highly suggestive -wink- -wink-.
The buildings in our town are pretty old. This place has been here awhile and was settled due to a natural gas boom. There was a nice glass factory in town that went bust, an old empty lot where the wood mill burnt down quite a few years ago, and that pretty much describes the economic status of where I live. But during WWII it was declared Small Town USA by some pamphlet that was written because it exemplified a small town in the USA. It's still pretty much the same. But the reason I bring this up is that some of the buildings still have the old mural advertisements on the sides. So after we pass the obscene concrete sculpture we pass the local VFW hall.

Of course some idiot covered the M in Miller with aluminum siding. So now it is Iller beer. That's how I think of it anyway.
Now that we've had our alcohol fix it's time for something softer a few buildings down the road.

I have no idea where Gallery 1 is.
And at this point we turn the corner and head around downtown. And as we go on down the street we get to the building that is the entire reason for this entry. I've seen the sign on this building for the last 3 years that we have lived in this town, and ever since we got a digital camera, I've wanted to get a picture and post it on here. I've finally accomplished this, so now my life seems a little empty.

They spelled the name wrong, but I thought he used to run a gaming store in Wyoming.
After I took this picture I thought about going around town and finding places that have the names of various folks I read, but then it started to feel like a bit more work than necessary, hell, I hadn't even posted since our summer vacation in June.(see still pretending it's September) And also the only other place I could think of was Rachel's Highway Cafe.
After passing up Fleenor's place we find the local supermarket. Cox's. Yes, you heard me right.
Of course now that Xanga has shrunk and mangled the picture you can't really read the sign. They also run a gift shop across the street. Now I have a good friend that lives in Louisville and he showed me the tobacco stores down there owned by another grocery store called Cox's and they are called Cox's Smokers. That beats this one by a mile for sheer audacity.
Moving on along we pass by this innocuous apartment building.
Nothing really special about it by looking at it. According to my father this is where Ray Charles was arrested in Indiana. Now, I just tried to research this, but I got as far as 'a hotel room in Indiana' for detail. One of them said Indianapolis, but I don't really doubt my father's word on this one. He used to work for his father at a garage down the street, and later tended bar at a tavern nearby. If I'm doing my math right it would have been around that time. Now, we aren't going to see it because it isn't on the way to the ice cream place, but Elvis used to go fising in a pond on the south side of town with the Gaithers(a gospel group/family). So that makes two musical drug addicts that hung out in our town!
Let's get moving, the sun is going down. We finally arrive at our destination. A summer favorite since 1952. Dor-tee's drive in!
I don't know how many owners this place has been through, but it has a new one this year. We'll see if he lasts. MMM relatively cheap soft serve ice cream served by inept high school girls, my favorite.
While here I notice the sign advertising one of their new food specials.

Don't ask, I don't know, nor do I want to.
So now we need to head home before it gets dark. We'll pass by the local movie theater, one screen with a stage, 7pm shows on Friday, Saturday, and 2 shows on Sunday. I didn't get a picture.
We head up the main drag of town towards that skyline of downtown, taking the long way home so we can see the glory that is Small Town USA.
